Couple lounging comfortably at home

How to keep your Bloomington home comfortable this winter

The plummeting temperatures in Bloomington aren’t leaving, and while it’s easy to dream about the warmer weather, it’s critical to remember that you can remain just as comfortable during winter. Of course, your furnace plays a large role in this, which is why it’s so vital to schedule annual furnace service.

We do have to bring up the fact that there are only a couple things that will provide as much to your comfort this year as a well-tuned furnace. That’s why furnace service should be completed annually. After all, who wants to spend a frigid winter not knowing if their furnace is going to keep them comfortable the entire season?

Already check off your annual furnace service? Here are a couple other tasks you can do to help keep your home comfortable:

  • Energy audit — a lot of energy companies will have an energy audit for your home so you can find areas that need improving. You could be surprised what areas are allowing hot or cold air to get out.
  • Weatherstripping — regardless of the door, doors permit the opportunity for a lot of cold air to get in to your home. However, when your door is shut, you could still have air making its way indoors. Check to see if your weatherstripping is all good or if it’s worn, torn, or damaged in any other way that could be letting cold air inside. If you notice any problems, weatherstripping is easy to swap and could take care of the problem.
  • Recessed lighting — one of the most common culprits for air leaks could be your recessed lighting. Depending on the light’s age, they may be letting all the hot air in your home sneak out through your ceiling. Fixing this is as easy as sealing it with caulk or aluminum tape.

These handful tips are just a place to start, but do recognize that there are other easy fixes you can handle once you’ve had annual furnace service completed. Many of them can be cost-effective and easy jobs to complete on the weekend.
